They were good looking planes, But pilots didn't like them much because the production model had a single-stage, single-speed supercharger that gave a critical altitude of only 12,000 ft. Good for ground support but enemy fighters would take them from above!

There was also an unfound fear that in a hard landing or crash landing, the engine would crush them. The plane was actually extremely good though, with a great roll rate. The army forced Bell to take out a lot of parts that would have made it even better, though. Or so I've heard.

Anyway, it's a beautiful plane. Almost what you'd always imagine a fighter plane to look like.

I think the Russians called them P400's. But they also put them to good use in ground support.

I know that near the end of WWII they came out with another model, the P63, if my memory serves. It was much better, but the Army Air Corp. already had picked another plane, or something like that.

The King Cobra was basically the Airacobra, but better. But it came so late in the war, the US already had Mustangs and Thunderbolts. The majority of them were then sold to the Russians in the Lend Lease program. It still lacked a two stage super charger.
